asked the Minister for Defence the present strength of the Air Corps; its main functions; and the total cost involved.

Limerick West): The strength of the Air Corps on 30 September 1987 was 814. The main functions of the Air Corps are: (a) to operate in support of the Army; (b) to co-operate with the Naval Service in maritime surveillance and defence and in fishery protection; (c) to aid the civil community in search and rescue, air ambulance and emergency relief; (d) to assist Government Departments. Expenditure from the Defence Vote 1987 in respect of the Air Corps is estimated at £21.7 million.
