Vol. 374 No. 8

Written Answers. - Computerisation Proposals.

30.

asked the Minister for Defence the proposals if any, he has, for computerisation in his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): In March 1987 my Department prepared a draft strategic plan for computerisation and submitted it to the Department of Finance. In June 1987 that Department, having examined the draft plan, requested that a major study be undertaken with the aid of consultants to determine a corporate strategy for the Department and the Defence Forces.

This study has recently commenced. It will address itself particularly to logistics systems, that is, stores management, procurement of supplies, payment of accounts, auditing; revision where necessary of Army pay procedures, vote accounting etc. having regard to the proposed transfer of certain of my Department's functions to Galway as part of the Government's decentralisation programme; personnel systems and their relationship with pay systems; operations requirements. Proposals in relation to computerisation will be implemented in the light of the study.
