Vol. 374 No. 8

Written Answers. - Solicitors Act.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, he has to amend the Solicitors Act in order to bring about an improvement in the performance of the Incorporated Law Society in matters dealing with the public in relation to land dealings; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A review of the Solicitors' Acts 1954-1960 has been almost finalised in my Department, and I hope to be in a position to submit comprehensive proposals for amending legislation to the Government very shortly. These will include proposals to improve the method of dealing with complaints from the public, to reform the disciplinary machinery for solicitors, and to provide for the involvement of lay people in that process.

However, the Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to refer to any specific proposals that I might have, in advance of Government approval.
