Vol. 374 No. 8

Written Answers. - Compulsory Driver Education.

65.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will introduce compulsory driver education; if so, the classes of licence holders to which it will apply; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no proposals to alter the present arrangements under the Road Traffic Acts governing the granting of diving licences.

Under existing law, a person wishing to obtain a full driving licence for a particular class of vehicle for the first time, must satisfy a driver tester that he has a satisfactory knowledge of the "Rules of the Road" and can drive the vehicle competently. It is a matter for each individual to make whatever arrangements are necessary to acquire the appropriate level of knowledge and experience in driving safely which will enable him to pass the test.

The present arrangements meet EC driver licensing requirements and appear to be adequate, having regard to road safety and staffing constraints.
