Vol. 374 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Cut-Backs.

41.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason there has been a cut-back of 42 per cent in his Department's information services in the Estimates for next year; where such cut-backs will fall; and if he will outline their implications.

In the light of the overall budgetary situation there has been, as the Deputy's question indicates, a significant reduction over last year's figure in the amount available for information work to my Department for 1988. However, it is my intention to ensure that the work of the Department in this area is affected to the least degree possible by the new financial situation.

Is the Minister concerned about cut-backs in this area at present given the Government's complaints about the over and above the normal level of activity of an accredited ambassador here?

I have had this matter very carefully examined and I am taking further steps to ensure that this area of diplomatic activity in regard to Anglo-Irish and Northern relations will be affected to the minimum degree possible in any budgetary cuts which may be necessary because of financial constraints.

Is the Minister's Department aware of the area of diplomatic activity in which the Government press secretary involved himself——

The Deputy cannot refer to that matter. This is not good enough.

Was the Minister aware of it?

I do not intend to comment on any silly nonsense suggested by the Deputy.

(Interruptions.)

I will not allow the Deputy and the Minister to circumvent the ruling of the Chair.
