Vol. 374 No. 10

Written Answers. - Repatriation of Irish Prisoners.

25.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the research carried out by the Irish in Britain Representation Group that indicates that there are between 40 and 50 Irish prisoners in British jails seeking repatriation; if he will support their request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware from a reply I gave on 7 May last, the position regarding transfers from Britain to this country will be governed by the European Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons which the Government have signed. The preparation of legislation to enable ratification is a matter for the Minister for Justice. I am aware of the research the Deputy refers to and it has been brought to the attention of the Minister for Justice.

If it is a matter of transfer to Northern Ireland I am prepared to consider raising requests for transfer with the British authorities.
