Vol. 374 No. 10

Written Answers. - European Neutral States Proposal.

35.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will convene a meeting of the European neutral states including Finland, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Cyprus and Malta along with Ireland with a view to co-ordinating Ireland's position on matters concerning those European neutral states with respect to the action, if any, which needs to be taken in the context of the United Nations General Assembly; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Irish delegation at the United Nations General Assembly has close contact with the delegations of the other European neutral states mentioned by the Deputy — except in the case of Switzerland which, of course, is not a member of the Organisation. The approach of those states is close to our own on many issues. Our positions are especially close in the field of arms control and disarmament. We intend to maintain contact with these delegations: a special meeting is not necessary.
