Vol. 374 No. 10

Written Answers. - American-Russian Summit Meeting.

39.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if a formal invitation has issued to either the Russian or American Governments, or their Ambassadors, offering the Republic of Ireland as a suitable location for a possible summit meeting between President Reagan and Mr. Gorbachev; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No formal invitation has been issued, but the Government are satisfied that both countries are fully aware they would be welcome.

The Government welcome last Friday's announcement by the United States and the Soviet Union that a summit meeting between President Reagan and General Secretary Gorbachev will take place in Washington beginning 7 December. It is envisaged that a further meeting will be held in the Soviet Union in the first half of 1988. The Government look forward to the signature of a treaty on the complete elimination of intermediaterange nuclear weapons, and hope that progress can be made on achieving major reductions in the strategic nuclear arsenals of the Superpowers, as agreed at the Reykjavik Summit meeting last year, and also on preventing the further militarisation of outer space.
