asked the Minister for Defence in relation to current proposals for an intake of recruits into the Permanent Defence Force (a) the number of applicants interviewed; (b) the number called for medical examination; (c) the number of applicants who were told that they would be taken in; and (d) the number actually taken in.

Limerick West): A total of 4,734 persons were interviewed in connection with the current intake of recruits to the Permanent Defence Force. Four hundred and ninety-nine persons were asked to report for preliminary enlistment procedures and medical examination and those who meet the enlistment requirements are being enlisted at present. On 13 November 1987, 158 persons had been enlisted.
