Vol. 375 No. 4

Written Answers. - UNESCO Director-Generalship.

67.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if Ireland expressed any preferences for particular candidates in the recent contest for the director-generalship of UNESCO; and if so, for whom.

Ireland voted for the appointment of Professor Federico Mayor as Director-General of UNESCO during the meeting of the General Conference of that organisation. As Ireland does not have a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO we did not take part in the elections to nominate Professor Mayor but stood ready to support a new Director-General who would be capable of reinvigorating the organisation.
