Vol. 375 No. 4

Written Answers. - Training of Drivers.

74.

asked the Minister for Finance the arrangements he will make to resume the training of drivers of official Customs and Excise motor vehicles and patrol cars in view of the fact that no officers have been trained since 1984.

Training of drivers of official customs and excise cars has not taken place since 1984 because of a shortage of official cars. As there were sufficient trained drivers available to operate the Border mobile patrols, it was considered more important to employ all available cars on enforcement rather than on training. It is expected that a car for training purposes will become available before the end of the year. Training of drivers of heavy duty vehicles and articulated vehicles has not been interrupted.
