Vol. 375 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cargo Vessels Policy.

89.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give details of his policy regarding visits by ships carrying radioactive materials to Irish ports; if it is the practice to obtain advance details in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The entry of cargo vessels into Irish ports is a matter for the relevant harbour authorities. The by-laws of the various harbour authorities contain general provisions in relation to goods of a hazardous nature carried on ships entering their ports. In the case of Dublin Port special by-laws for dangerous goods provide inter alia for advance written notification of not less than 48 hours to the harbour master prior to the entry of vessels having such goods on board. Loading or unloading of radioactive substances is subject to licence by the Nuclear Energy Board.
