asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to continue the amenity grants for 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 76 together. Deputies will be aware of the Government's proposals for distribution of the national lottery surplus. A sum of £6 million has been made available to my Department from the surplus for allocation to amenity projects proposed by local authorities and voluntary bodies. Projects to be assisted will include the provision and development of open spaces and amenity and landscaping works designed to enhance the local environment. The provision of recreational facilities such as parks, outdoor playing areas, community centres and youth clubs will also be assisted. The schemes will be administered through the local authorities and all counties and county boroughs will benefit. In allocating grants, account will also be taken of the need to enhance the historical, recreational and amenity value of designated urban renewal areas, thereby contributing to the general effort to secure the renewal of the areas concerned.
