Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Water Quality Standards.

28.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement regarding the extent of compliance, in Ireland, with EC Directive 76/160 on water quality standards of designated bathing waters.

Seven bathing areas have been monitored in accordance with the requirements of EC Directive 75/160 on the quality of bathing water. The beaches involved are Portmarnock, Dollymount, Courtown, Tramore, Fountainstown, Salthill and Cappa Pier (Kilrush). Compliance has been achieved for all the bathing waters monitored except for Dollymount beach in 1986 and 1987 when the level of compliance with the standards for total coliforms and faecal coliforms was just below that required by the directive. I intend that the requirements of the directive will be formally extended to a substantial number of additional bathing places with effect from the 1988 bathing season.
