Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Local Authority Amalgamations.

42.

asked the Minister for the Environment if it is intended to amalgamate the administrations of Limerick city and county, Waterford city and county and Cork city and county; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government are committed to a renewal of local government, through a streamlining of structures and the granting of important new powers to local authorities to promote and support the development of their areas. I have, accordingly, undertaken a comprehensive review of the local government system and have as part of this process consulted the local government representative bodies. Arising from this review I intend to bring forward a substantial programme of reforms as soon as possible. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage on the matter raised by the Deputy.
