Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Designated Areas.

99.

asked the Minister for the Environment in respect of the designated areas for urban renewal in each of the five county boroughs (a) the total acreage (b) the total number of projects under development and the acreage involved (c) the total number of other developments for which planning permission has been granted but not exercised since designation and the acreage involved and (d) the total number of planning applications current and the acreage involved in the case of each borough.

The size of the areas designated under the Urban Renewal Act, 1986 in each of the five county boroughs is 162 acres in Dublin (in addition to the Custom House Docks area), 99 acres in Cork, 39 acres in Limerick and 14 acres in each of Galway and Waterford. The information being sought by the Deputy in relation to development projects is primarily a matter between the individual developers and the local authorities concerned. I am responsible for the policy underlying the urban renewal initiative but I have no function in relation to individual projects. My Department have, however, been keeping in touch with the progress being achieved and I am willing to let the Deputy have details of the projects that have commenced or are expected to commence shortly. I will communicate with the Deputy in the next few days.
