Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Travellers' Halting Sites.

101.

asked the Minister for the Environment his views on the correct amount to be spent on the provisions of halting sites for travellers expressed in terms of cost per family; and if a cost which is double or treble the average cost of conventional housing per family would be acceptable to him.

The average cost per family of serviced sites for travellers will vary from one location to another depending on local circumstances — for example the number of family pitches to be provided, the distance from existing roads and sanitary services, the topography of the site itself and the amount of screening which must be provided. In these circumstances it is not possible to provide a guide price in terms of cost per family for the provision of sites. The objective is to ensure that sites are provided in the most cost-effective way possible. To date there has been no case of any serviced sites for travellers being provided at double or treble the cost of conventional local authority housing.
