Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Primary School Entry Age.

114.

asked the Minister for Education in respect of the Government decision of 1981 that four and a half years should be the minimum age of entry to primary schools, the annual Exchequer saving projected at that time in respect of (a) each of the following years to date, (b) 1988 and (c) the equivalent amounts which it is now estimated would have been saved in each of those years had that decision remained in force.

I understand that the Government at the time proposed the raising of the age of entry to primary schools on the grounds that it could be justified educationally. Details of costings that might be achieved from the measure are not available in my Department.
