Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Privately Owned Listed Buildings.

136.

asked the Minister for the Environment the guidelines, if any, which exist governing the sale of privately owned listed buildings; if interior details, fireplaces, doorcases, ceilings, are specifically protected by his Department; if his attention has been drawn to the proposed sale of 41-46 North Great George's Street, Dublin 1, in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Planning authorities are empowered under the Planning Acts to indicate as an objective of their development plans the preservation of particular buildings of artistic, architectural or historic interest; they have similar powers in relation to interiors, including fixtures of artistic, architectural or historic interest. Where planning authorities exercise that power, such buildings or interiors are listed in their development plans and the effect is that planning permission is required to carry out any development including alterations. The development control requirements in relation to listed buildings or interiors, in private ownership are not changed by the sale of the properties.

I have no function in relation to the sale of private property.
