Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Primary Education Cutbacks.

208.

asked the Minister for Education the number of additional teachers it is anticipated will go on the teachers' panels as a result of the proposed cutbacks in primary education; the salaries which will be paid in 1988 to teachers on primary school panels who are not working in schools; and when it is anticipated teaching posts will be made available to them.

The position of national schools where staffing may be affected under the new schedule of averages will not be determined until the school returns of averages for the quarter ended 31 December, 1987, are available.

It is not possible at this time, therefore, to say how many teachers will go on to the appropriate panels. Teachers who are placed on the panel continue teaching in their own schools, in a redundant but paid capacity, until such time as they secure alternative posts through the operation of the panel rule. The majority of such teachers should be redeployed next September.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary teaching posts that will be lost in Cork city and county because of the contents of recent circulars and directives sent from her Department.

The position with regard to national teachers whose posts may be affected under the new schedule of averages will not be determined until the school returns of averages for the quarter ended 31 December 1987 are available. My Department will then communicate with the authorities of the schools in question in the matter.

asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she proposes to take to prevent the suppression of teaching posts at a school (details supplied) in County Kerry.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 210 to 215, inclusive, together.
