Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Visits by Naval Ships.

59.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of his policy regarding visits by naval ships carrying nuclear weapons to Irish ports; if it is the practice to obtain advance details in this regard; if consideration will be given to introducing a ban on such visits; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Foreign naval vessels visiting Irish ports require the permission of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Permission for a visit to take place will normally be granted provided that it does not form part of a naval exercise and that the vessel is not carrying nuclear weapons. When an application for a visit by a foreign naval vessel is received in my Department, consultations take place with the appropriate authorities with a view to ensuring that the above conditions are complied with.
