Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Irish-Libyan Joint Commission.

62.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Irish-Libyan Joint Commission is still in existence; if so, if he will name the chairman; and when the next meeting is scheduled to take place.

The Joint Commission for Economic, Industrial, Scientific and Technological Co-operation between Ireland and the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya was established in 1983. The first and only meeting of this joint commission took place in May 1983. The agreement which allows for meetings of this joint commission to take place is still in existence.

The exchanges between the two Governments which led to the establishment of the joint commission did not specify who should be the co-chairman on either side. Prior to the first meeting in 1983 it was decided that the Irish co-chairman would be the Minister for Agriculture. It is the view of the Government that in the absence of a specific agreement on this aspect, it remains open to either side to designate as co-chairman the most appropriate Minister in the light of prevailing circumstances and requirements.

No date has been fixed for the next meeting of the joint commission.
