Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Cork Unemployment.

104.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the serious unemployment situation in the Cork city and county area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the serious unemployment situation in Cork city and county. I have been assured by the Industrial Development Authority, which has national responsibility for the implementation of industrial development policies, that they are actively promoting the Cork region for the development of new industry.

In this connection, the Deputy will be aware that I recently announced that a new project, Island Pharmaceuticals, is being established at Carrigtwohill for the manufacture of finished pharmaceuticals and that Millipore Ireland Ltd also plan to start production of pharmaceuticals at Carrigtwohill early in 1988. Furthermore, negotiations by the IDA on a number of further significant investments in the Cork area are at an advanced stage. For example I also recently announced details of a major clothing plant which is to be located in Ballincollig. The project is expected to result in 650 jobs when the plant is in full production.
