asked the Minister for Defence when he received an application from the Garda for assistance in the O'Grady kidnap case; and his views on whether the Army should have been involved in the hunt for the kidnappers at a much earlier stage.

Limerick West): A request for military assistance in the O'Grady kidnap case was made by the Garda Síochána in respect of an incident in the Midleton area on the afternoon of 26 October 1987.

The initiative in regard to such requests for military assistance rests with the Garda Síochána and, in the case in question, military assistance was provided as requested by the Garda authorities.
