Vol. 376 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inspectors' Reports.

10.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in Northern Ireland the results of the examination of individual schools by the schools inspectorate are available free of charge to parents for scrutiny; and if she will introduce a similar reform here.

I am aware that it is proposed in Northern Ireland to make school reports by the inspectorate on schools available free of charge to members of the public with effect from the beginning of 1988. I have no plans at present to introduce a similar arrangement here.

I am very much interested in the question the Deputy has put, and I intend to inquire further when it comes into operation.

I thank the Minister for her positive approach to this. Will she consider introducing this for the academic year commencing in September 1988?

This is coming in in Northern Ireland in 1988 and it will be interesting for me and my Department to see the evaluation of that process. I undertake to come back to the House and speak again about at that point.
