Vol. 376 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funds.

43.

asked the Minister for Education if applications are being sought for allocations from the £10 million national lottery funds set aside towards grants for local youth, sports and recreational facilities; the amenities to which they will be allocated; the qualifying conditions for such grants; and when she will be in a position to allocate funds.

The sum of £10 million referred to by the Deputy is comprised as follows:

—£6 million for the amenity grants scheme operated by the Department of the Environment

and

—£4 million for the capital grants scheme for the provision of recreational facilities and the face-lift grant scheme operated by my Department.

The moneys available to my Department in this connection will be used to support local initiative in the provision of youth, sport and community facilities throughout the country.

The conditions of the capital grant scheme are at this moment being revised in consultation with the Department of Finance and copies of the revised scheme will be made available to the House when finalised.

A number of proposals for grant assistance are being considered by my Department at present and I anticipate that decisions regarding allocations in these cases will be made shortly. It will, however, be open to interested groups, whose proposals come within the terms of the schemes, to make application to my Department for assistance. Application forms for this purpose will be available from my Department's Youth Section as soon as the conditions of the scheme are finalised.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give a breakdown of the allocation of National Lottery funds to youth and sport and the amount of funds yet to be designated; and if it is Government policy to fund these activities now and in the future from lottery funds only.
