Vol. 376 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Curriculum Council.

46.

asked the Minister for Education her views on the function of the new advisory board on curriculum assessment without the participation of teachers; when she will announce its membership; and when it will hold its first meeting.

As the Deputy will be aware I announced the formation and terms of reference of the National Curriculum Council on 2 November 1987. As I have said earlier in reply to another question, I regret that the teachers' unions have declined to nominate representatives to the council. Nevertheless, it is my intention that the council will set about its task immediately and report to me in due course. The council will have representatives from other educational interests and also persons nominated by me for the qualifications they bring to the task, together with advisers from my Department. I am confident therefore that the council will contain a sufficient breadth of knowledge and experience among its membership to accomplish its task with distinction.

I propose to launch the council on Tuesday, December 8, 1987, during which I will also give details of its membership.
