Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Storage of Asbestos.

172.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has satisfied himself that the large quantity of asbestos removed from the Custom House site, Dublin 1 was done so in accordance with the regulations set down by his Department; if the present storage of the asbestos is also in accordance with the regulations governing dangerous substances; where it is located; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Inspectors of my Department visited the site at Custom House docks prior to the commencement of demolition work and gave advice about the requirements of the Factories (Asbestos Processes) Regulations, 1975, in relation to the removal of asbestos roofing from old buildings. The roofing consisted of corrugated asbestos cement sheeting containing a small proportion of asbestos.

When carried out in accordance with the regulations, this type of operation does not give rise to the release into the air of asbestos dust fibres likely to be of consequence to health. Information which I have received shows that no asbestos dust was detected during the removal operation.

The disposal or storage of asbestos, including the sheeting in question, is outside my Department's remit.
