Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dental Benefit.

180.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Eastern Health Board has, from 1 September 1987, refused liability for the patient's portion of the cost of dentures under the social welfare scheme; and if he will indicte the reasons for this; if he will ensure that this decision is reversed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the Eastern Health Board has suspended the payment to medical card holders of the patient's contribution payable when dentures are provided under the Department of Social Welfare's treatment benefit scheme. I understand that this decision was taken because the funds allocated by the health board for this purpose were exhausted. The Deputy will be aware that the allocation of funds to the different services is primarily a matter for the health board concerned.
