Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Contributions Revenue.

181.

asked the Minister for Health the cost or estimated cost in terms of revenue foregone to the Exchequer due to the operation of the income ceiling on health contributions for each year between 1980 and 1987 inclusive.

It is estimated that the absence of an income ceiling would have resulted in additional yields of health contributions in the years 1980-1987 set down in the table hereunder.

Year

Estimated Revenue Foregone

*Based on expected yield.

It should, however, be emphasised that the removal of the income ceiling would inevitably lead to demands for changes in the eligibility status of persons in Category III which would, in turn, require additional expenditure on the provision of extra services.
