Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dental Treatment.

188.

asked the Minister for Health the plans his Department have to provide for the same entitlement for children in the age group of 12-16 years as primary school students have in relation to dental treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Joint Working Party on Dental Services which reported in 1979, recommended that, if an extension of eligibility for public dental services were to be considered, priority should be given to the 12-16 years age group. However, the working party also recommended that it would be unwise to extend eligibility to any further group until adequate services were available to those already covered. I fully accept the desirability of extending the public dental service to the 12-16 year olds but as the existing services for adults are less than satisfactory I cannot envisage any extension of the scheme in the immediate future.
