Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teacher Numbers.

208.

asked the Minister for Education if it is now expected that the combination of posts made available through retirements, resignations and the voluntary redundancy scheme at primary level will be more than the numbers recommended for transfer through the panel system by the Quota Review Committee; and, if so, if she intends to recruit additional teachers to make up the shortfall.

Recruitment of additional teachers (as opposed to the redeployment of teachers from a diocesan or other approved panel) will apply in 1988 only in the case of fillable vacancies occurring between now and 30 June 1988 and where temporary replacements are needed in the normal way for teachers leaving on career breaks. It is expected that, in general, all other posts will be filled, where appropriate, by the redeployment of teachers from the panel, and that the total number of redundancy offers will equal (but not exceed) the number of teachers remaining on the panel after these vacancies have been filled.
