Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

20.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to secure a substantial allocation from the national lottery, if necessary on a once-off basis, to assist in efforts towards the alleviation of the impending famine in Ethiopia; and if he will made a statement on the matter.

43.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will recommend to the Government that a special allocation should be made from the national lottery for the alleviation of famine in the Third World, in view of the cutbacks in financial allocations in this area at a time when a major famine is imminent in Ethiopia; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 43 together.

My Department has over recent months allocated a total of £355,000 from its disaster relief fund towards famine relief in Ethiopia. We will continue to keep the situation in Ethiopia under constant review and if developments there demand that representations be made by me for funds from the national lottery I will do so.
