Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Suicides.

110.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of suicides in Irish prisons within the past ten years; and if he will give the breakdown on a prison by prison basis.

Prison records indicate that one person committed suicide in Limerick Prison in 1981 and one person committed suicide in Mountjoy Prison in each of the years 1982 and 1983.

Six persons died in custody from 1984 to date — three in Mountjoy Prison and one in Loughan House in 1985, one in Mountjoy Prison in 1986 and one in St. Patrick's Institution in 1987.

The deaths in Loughan House and St. Patrick's Institution were described as accidental by the coroner's jury. One of the deaths in Mountjoy Prison in 1985 was the result of a self-administered overdose of drugs, the others were caused by asphyxia due to hanging.
