Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pollution Stretches.

167.

asked the Minister for the Environment arising out of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 13 on Wednesday, 21 October, 1987, the number of local authorities which have identified pollution stretches in their areas and proposed programmes to deal with them; and if he will make a statement on the size of the problem in this respect at present.

Last July, An Foras Forbartha published a report entitled Water Quality in Ireland; the Current Position which gives an overview of national water quality covering the years 1982-1986 and provides information on the quality status of particular river stretches. Each local authority has been asked to consider this report in the context of its own area and, within a standardised report and questionnaire format devised by my Department, to assess and comment on the findings and to outline the steps it intends to take in relation to polluted waters. Having regard to the detailed nature of the replies requested, local authorities have been asked that these reports be forwarded by next February. Until these reports have been received and assessed, I will not be in a position to comment further.
