Vol. 376 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Complaints Board.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases pending before the Garda Complaints Board; the number of investigations completed and awaiting hearings; the number of cases which have been heard against members of the Garda since the board was established; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda Síochána Complaints Board is an independent statutory body established in April of this year under the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act, 1986, and I have no function in the day-to-day operations of the board. I would draw the attention of the Deputy to section 13 of the Garda Síochána (Complaints) Act which provides that the board must make a report to the Minister for Justice each year of its activities and that this report must be laid before each House of the Oireachtas. I do not propose at this stage to request the board to furnish the detailed information required to answer this question.
