Vol. 376 No. 10

Written Answers. - Lead-Free Petrol.

66.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that all French and German cars have been adapted to burn lead-free petrol only; and the arrangements he proposes to make to ensure that garages and petrol stations in all key locations will have supplies of lead-free petrol to cater for our tourists in the forthcoming season.

A network of 13 outlets for the sale of unleaded petrol has been established in the past year by two of the largest distributors. An expansion of the network is, I understand, planned for early in the New Year to cater in particular for the demands of motoring tourists from continental Europe. The network should provide the basis for compliance with the terms of the relevant EC directive which requires the availability and balanced distribution of unleaded petrol by October 1989.
