Vol. 377 No. 3

Written Answers. - Refusal of Hospital Admission.

130.

asked the Minister for Health if he will initiate an inquiry into the case of a person (details supplied) who was refused admission to St. Vincent's Hospital, Richmond Road, Dublin 3 on Friday 22 January 1988 in the Freeman's Unit, between 9.45 p.m. — 11.15 p.m.; if the person was due to be hospitalised there prior to that date and in view of this person's subsequent death several hours later; if he will allay public disquiet and make a statement on the matter.

I have had inquires made of the Eastern Health Board and the authorities of St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview. The person referred to by the Deputy was not referred or did not present seeking admission for herself to St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview on 23 January, 1988.

The person concerned had requested an admission of a relative to St. Vincent's Hospital on Friday night, 23 January, 1988 and admission was arranged following assessment by the doctor on duty. The person accompanied the relative to the hospital and she appeared to be satisfied with the arrangements that had been made for the patient.

The Eastern Health Board's community services had ongoing contact with the person concerned and her family and did not consider that in-patient treatment was indicated in her case.
