asked the Minister for Education the estimated number of people in the country and in the Dublin area that have basic literacy difficulties; and if she will give an indication of the trend in these figures in recent years.

As I indicated in the Dáil on 3 November, 1987 in reply to question No. 4 from Deputy John Bruton there are no official estimates of the level of illiteracy in Ireland and the position has not changed since then.
