Vol. 377 No. 5

Written Answers. - Provision of Medical Emergency Facilities.

49.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Health the provisions which have been made to cope with a major medical emergency in Limerick arising from, for example, an air crash; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Mid-Western Health Board will respond to any major emergency within its area of operation in the context of its plan for dealing with such events.

This plan, as with the plans of the other health boards, consists of a set of procedures to be followed in the event of a major emergency and provides for the involvement of hospitals, their personnel, the ambulance service and any other service which the board may require.

In addition, the emergency plans of local authorities and Garda are designed in such a way as to mesh in with the health board plan. It is the combination of the plans of each of the services which forms the overall major emergency plan.

The rationalisation of the acute hospital service in the Limerick area will lead to an improvement in hospital and emergency services.
