asked the Minister for Defence the number of officers serving in the Defence Forces (excluding FCA) at (a) January 1987 and (b) 1 January 1988; and the number of other ranks serving on battalion duties.

Limerick West): The number of officers serving in the Permanent Defence Force on 1 January 1987 was 1,581. The corresponding figure for 1 January 1988 was 1,577. The number of other ranks personnel serving on battalion duties on those dates was 4,125 and 3,948 respectively.
