asked the Minister for the Environment when it is proposed to distribute the £1 million which he has made available to deal with problems of the homeless in 1988; the criteria whereby the money will be allocated; the groups which will be eligible to apply; the qualifications which such groups would require in order to be eligible; the approximate time it is intended it will require before moneys are paid out; the subsequent time required before net additional housing accommodation will be provided to deal with the problems of the homeless; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Homeless People.
The £1 million is being provided as an expansion of the voluntary housing scheme operated at local level by housing authorities. The funds are available for the provision by bodies already approved, or approved in the future under the voluntary housing scheme of accommodation for homeless persons. Discussions are being arranged between my Department and representatives of the voluntary housing movement, following which full details will be notified to local authorities.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will indicate, for each housing authority functional area, the number of people who are estimated by the authority and his Department to be homeless; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Because of the nature of the problem, the numbers of homeless persons seeking housing in certain local authority areas can vary from time to time. In 1986, 941 applicants classified as homeless were provided with local authority housing; corresponding figures for 1987 are not yet available. Many of these persons were not on local authority waiting lists. Details of the numbers of homeless housing applicants where circumstances were found, on investigation, to warrant housing by the local authority are set out in the following table:—
Approved applicants for local authority housing classified as homeless at 31 December 1987
