Vol. 377 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

94.

asked the Minister for Education if she will indicate the way in which she expects community-comprehensive and vocational schools to still offer a wide range of subject choices and accept all pupils regardless of ability with the proposed change in the pupil-teacher ratio; whether it would be unjust and impractical to expect this sector of the post primary system to operate on the same basis as the voluntary sector.

All categories of post-primary school are now catering for a wide range of subject choice and ability levels and I am confident that they will continue to do so. The Government are of the opinion that the developing equalisation of education provision should be reflected in the allocation of teaching posts at post-primary level.

95.

asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm her intention to save approximately £10.3 million in 1988, as detailed in answers to parliamentary questions and confirmed in the budget of 27 January 1988, by enforcing Circular 20/87 and the 20:1 pupil-teacher ratio from September 1988.

In regard to primary schools I would refer the Deputy to my replies to Questions Nos. 29 and 47 of 3 November and 3 December 1987, respectively. I have nothing to add to these replies. With regard to savings in the post-primary sector I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 314 of 27 January 1988.
