Vol. 378 No. 1

Written Answers. - Restoration of Kilmainham Jail.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, he has for the continuation of the restoration and refurbishment of Kilmainham Jail, Dublin 8; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Works are progressing well on the restoration of the Infirmary Building and on fitting it out as an administrative centre. A contract has been placed for the renovation and repair of the front facade and forecourt and arrangements are in hand to instal floodlighting. An audio-visual show is in course of production. I hope that all of these projects will be completed by mid-1988.

A detailed interpretative plan for the jail is also being prepared. This will cover such matters as exhibitions, special features and tour routes and will form a brief for the architects and engineers to plan the necessary site works. These works will, I expect, commence early in 1989 and be completed by 1992.
