Vol. 378 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Insurance Fund.

73.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if there is an upper age limit for employed persons, or proposed for self-employed persons, in the making of contributions to the social insurance fund; if, in respect of his proposals to extend PRSI to the self-employed, contributions will be required to be made by persons over 55 years of age; if so, if he will clarify whether or not upon reaching 66 years persons who commenced contributing over that age will be entitled at least to a part pension; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present employees between the ages of 16 years and pensionable age (66 years) are liable for PRSI contributions under the social insurance system.

The detailed provisions as regards contributions for self-employed persons, qualification conditions and benefits of the proposed social insurance arrangements for the self-employed are at present being finalised. Details of these will be set out in the Social Welfare Bill which will be available shortly.
