Vol. 378 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teacher Language Qualifications.

110.

asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers who are on the register of second level teaching who are qualified to teach (a) German, (b) Spanish and (c) Italian.

The regulations for the register of the intermediate school teacher which apply to secondary teachers only are framed by the registration council, a statutorily constituted body which includes representatives of the universities, school management and teacher organisations in its membership. The council prescribes that each applicant for registration must, inter alia, comply with the following conditions:

(a) hold a degree and a training in teaching qualification acceptable to the council;

or

(b) hold a qualification acceptable to the council in one of the subjects, art, home economics, music, physical education, religious education, woodwork or metalwork.

In the case of a teacher who becomes registered under condition (a) above information on the subjects of the teacher's degree is not kept by the registration council.
