Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Certificate Examinations.

174.

asked the Minister for Education the basis for arriving at a specified amount in connection with the total fees to be paid in connection with pupils sitting for intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

As indicated in the answer to Question No. 24 of 11 February 1988, the amount allocated to a school for the alleviation of hardship in the payment of examination fees is based on the amount allowed to the school under the scheme of aid towards the cost of school books.

175.

asked the Minister for Education if she will reduce the State examination fees for families who have more than one child sitting intermediate and leaving certificate examinations in any one year.

Under the scheme for the alleviation of hardship in the payment of examination fees, a reduction in the amount of the fee payable may be allowed in the case of necessitous pupils at the discretion of the school authorities subject to the total amount of such reductions not exceeding a specified amount notified to each school.

For the purposes of the scheme, a necessitous pupil is defined as a child from a home where genuine hardship exists because of, inter alia,“more than one child from the same family doing the certificate examinations”.

176.

asked the Minister for Education in respect of those who superintend examinations and correct papers for the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations: (1) the total numbers employed and (2) the number of teachers employed.

The total numbers of person employed by my Department in these posts in 1987 were: Superintendents, 3,444; Examiners of written papers, 2,774. All these persons were qualified teachers.
