Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries Development.

16.

asked the Minister for the Marine whether his attention has been drawn to the tourist potential, from the point of view of special interest holidays, in restocking our lakes and rivers; and the steps, if any, he is taking to assist in exploiting that potential.

I am satisfied that the considerable recreational and tourism value of our angling resource can best be maximized in the context of an overall programme for the proper management and development of inland fisheries. The conservation and development of stocks will naturally be a key element in any such programme.

To this end I am currently drawing up proposals for new policy objectives for inland fisheries, designed to ensure the best use of available resources to realise, among other priorities, the potential of angling as a tourism growth area. I hope to be in a position to make recommendations to Government very shortly.
