asked the Taoiseach if he will provide for the years 1983 to 1987 inclusive the statistics relating to the importation of fruit and vegetable products directly imported into Ireland from the following countries (a) South Africa (b) Namibia (c) Botswana (d) Mozambique (e) Zambia and (f) Lesotho and if he will provide for the years 1983 to 1987 inclusive the volume and value of coal imports to this State from the Republic of South Africa and from Namibia.

The information requested by the Deputy is given in the following tables:—

1. In general it should be noted that commodity detail from external trade statistics does not include:

(a) transactions (non-dutiable) of less than £100 each for 1985 and 1986 and £200 for 1987;

(b) trade by firms operating in Shannon Free Airport; and

(c) postal packages not covered by customs entries.

2. The country nomenclature of the European Economic Community, which is used for the purpose of customs documentation, does not enable separate data from South Africa and Namibia to be collected.
