Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Airport Garda Station.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the reasons for the decision to open a Garda station at Dublin Airport; if he will ensure that this development will not hinder the future development of the existing airport police or that the cost of providing a police service for the airport is transferred from Aer Rianta to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda Station at Dublin Airport is being established to provide a service to the public who use the airport and to cater for the members of the Garda Síochána who provide policing and security services there. These services, which have been provided for many years, are now being expanded to provide a uniformed Garda presence at the airport at all times.

As I indicated in reply to Questions Nos. 49 to 52 on 23 February 1988, the opening of a Garda station at Dublin Airport does not involve any change in the roles of either the Garda Síochána or the airport security force. There is no intention that the establishment of the new station should hinder in any way the development of the existing airport security force, nor is there any proposal that the cost of providing this force should be taken over from Aer Rianta by my Department.
